You've tried various sleeping aids, you've tried drinking hot milk, you've tried counting sheep and still you can't get no sleep at night. The darkness has become a dreaded and all too familiar place for you. You're exhausted and yet you can't seem to drift off into sleep.

Unfortunately insomnia is an all too common disorder which affects a large number of the population. For normal sleepers, sleep is something that is taken for granted. They simply get into bed at night and before they know it, they're asleep. For the insomniac, this is a dream that rarely or never happens.

Why has something so simple and so natural become a living nightmare? Well, little known to most, sleep isn't a simple process- in fact it's fairly complex. There are dozens of factors that can affect your ability to sleep. A poor diet, lack of exercise and bad sleep habits can trigger sleeplessness. Other factors including genetic make-up, how old you are and whether you are still growing affect the need and ability to sleep.

There are also important elements that help control your circadian rhythm such as sunlight and temperature. The list goes on, but the important thing to note is that sleep is affected by what you do in the day. What you do when you're awake affects how well you are able to sleep at night. So really the sleep process doesn't just begin as soon as you rest your head.

Experiencing stress, anxiety and worry in the day may disrupt sleep. These negative emotions can easily be triggered for a number of reasons such as financial troubles, pressures from work, relationship issues and traumatic events. It's no wonder why so many people suffer from sleep problems, since these negative factors are part of everyday life.

What we need to do is learn how to combat insomnia by targeting the source of the problem. We often ignore the signs that we are under too much stress and by doing this, we are putting our physical and mental health at risk. Experiencing muscle tension, palpitations and migraines are common when we are under too much stress. We may think that it's harmless, but it's not.

Stressful experiences and negative reactions to those experiences can become ingrained into our psyche. These factors can lead to negative behavior patterns, which are difficult to change and break out of, especially when we cannot learn to cope with life's stresses.

What's more sleep is a necessary state which helps restore and rejuvenate bodily functions. Without sleep we experience a lack of mental and physical energy to tackle everyday life. This can often perpetuate sleep problems and make daily life difficult to cope with.

It's important to pay attention to you sleep habits and emotional behavior in the day if you can't get no sleep at night. There are several natural and effective therapies that you can try to help you combat stress and deal with negative emotions.
